ACTIVITY ALERT - The return of a native and July's Exploring the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve (SMB) Walk

Over the past few years we've seen the sign, heard occasional calls, and talked to a few birders that have been fortunate to see pileated woodpeckers returning to the Bioreserve.

Pileated woodpeckers are common in mature forested areas of the United States and Canada, but from southeastern Massachusetts south to coastal Virginia they are rare to nonexistent. In the  SMB they are just starting to return since the destruction of our forests in the 19th century. For more on the pileated woodpecker go to our July, 2017, Newsletter.  http://www.greenfutures.org/?content=Ygpsw38SOo0jQJkR

July's Exploring the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve Walk will find us exploring prime SMB pileated habitat. We may hear or see one. We will definitely see some of their rectangular feeding excavations..

July's SMB walk will be July 14, Saturday. We will meet at 8 a.m. at The Trustees' parking area at the intersection if Indian Town Road and Yellow Hill Road, Fall River, MA.

Length of walk approximately 6 miles. Insect repellent, snack and water a good idea. Wear appropriate footwear for walking forest trails.

ACTIVITY ALERT - July's Exploring the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve Walk and the next one in August

This past Saturday found only five hardy humans and one smiling dog exploring the west slope of Copicut Hill west to King Philip's Spring. For a July morning the weather was perfect for hiking. Cool forest breezes and low humidity. Perhaps attendance was down because folks thought the oppressive heat and high humidity of the past couple of weeks would make hiking five miles through the forest unpleasant? Too bad. They missed out on a lovely morning walk.

August's Exploring the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve Walk will be August 11. More info on that walk will be emailed out the last week in July. Watch for it!

Sunset/Moonlight Bike Ride - Bike Fall River

Friday was a great night for our Sunset/Moonlight ride.  It was warm and muggy, but with an adequate breeze to offset some of that.  Unfortunately when we reached our sunset viewing site the clouds moved in just enough to obscure the sunset.  Moonrise was equally obscured.  However the rest of the night was a smooth ride to India Point Park.  After a brief rest on the bridge over I-195 we returned with an excellent moon view.  We finished later than I expected.  11:15 PM is way past my bedtime.  Here are a few shots of our enthusiastic group:
