Urban River Visions, November, 2003

Urban River Visions

The following is a basic summary of the results of the Urban River Visions charrette: Quequechan River Initiative,
11/13/2003

Goals & Expectations:

Partnership:

The Urban Ecology Institute (UEI) and Green Futures (GF) will partner to assess more fully the ecological, social, and legal resources relevant to transforming the Quequechan River in Fall River, MA into a vibrant community resource and healthy ecosystem.
Also, the UEI staff and GF volunteers will work together to develop action plans for the Quequechan River redevelopment project, and to implement the plans that have already been developed.

Scope of work:

The scope of work will be determined jointly, based on the needs and desires of GF and its partners in Fall River, and on the funding and staff resources UEI can commit to Fall River.
The focus will be on parcels identified in the Urban River Visions charrette process ("charrette parcels").
The scope of work will include legal assessment, including zoining, ownership, and title searches, of the charrette parcels; a social survey/outreach tool; and possibly ecological assessments of the charrette parcels.

Specific Community goals:

  • Daylight the Quequechan River falls
  • Create greenspace links and corridors along the Quequechan
  • Advocate for and help the bike path initiative
  • Advocate for an overlay district
  • Pursue general advocacy and outreach, including efforts to unify neighborhood groups, talk to neighbors, local businesses, give talks and slideshows, work with the Chamber of Commerce, and build on 'Healthy Communities' survey

* This plan should cover a two-year + period of time.
