Past Events & Accomplishments


  • Green Futures developed a constituency for, and helped defend the Freetown State Forest. We aided the Friends of the Freetown State Forest in organizing and incorporating. Our "Walk to Save and Celebrate Our Forests" attracted over 300 participants.
  • We participated in the Earth Day clean-ups in Fall River and surrounding towns, and still do so.
  • Green Futures has certified vernal pools with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife's Natural Heritage Program, and had a historical site and artifact recorded with the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
  • We have spoken out for watershed protection (and still do) before the Fall River City Council.
  • Green Futures was a co-sponsor of Tufts University' New England Environmental Conference and was nominated for an E.P.A. award.
  • We spoke at the State House in support of the Governor's 1994 "Open Space Bond Bill".
  • A written educational philosophy plan was submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service supporting interactive environmental studies and activities at the proposed Silvio Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.
  • Green Futures participated and had an exhibit at Fall River Heritage Park's "Earth Celebration" and at the Westport River Watershed Alliance's "River Day Celebration".


  • Green Futures provided input when contacted by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management when that agency was seeking information on area green space issues.
  • We met with the Y.M.C.A.'s Youth Service Corps to discuss areas of local environmental concern.
  • Green Futures members organized a land preservation organization called the Greater Fall River Land Conservancy.
  • We endorsed Governor Weld's 1995 "Open Space Bond Bill" at the State House.
  • Written comments and recommendations were submitted to the Commissioner of Fish, Wildlife, and Environmental Law Enforcement on outdoor education in Massachusetts.
  • Green Futures provided input on area environmental issues to E.P.A. Director Carol Browner and Vice-President Al Gore in preparation for their Fall River visit.
