July 2019 - Upcoming Bioreserve Walk, Moonlight Bike Ride

ACTIVITY ALERT - July's Exploring the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve Walk

July 13, Saturday, 8 a.m. we will walk and explore the Mill Brook Bogs Wildlife Management Area within the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve. We will also stop and  view the pollinator habitat created by a Freetown Eagle Scout.

We are losing our pollinators. Local wild pollinators include native bees and non-native, feral, honey bees; flower wasps and flies; butterflies and moths; various species of pollen/nectar beetles; hummingbirds. Here's one species close to extinction. The once locally abundant rusty patched bumblebee was added to the US Endangered Species List in 2017. You can read about it here: https://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2017/01/10/rusty-patched-bumblebee-designated-endangered-species/zCYNrChSt8ZXTlvLO2qZrJ/story.html

It is a wonder there are any pollinators left.  Uncontrolled development, continuing fragmentation and loss of our forests and wildlands, climate change, rampant use of pesticides and herbicides, landscape wide application of neurologically disrupting neonicotinoids and incessant seasonal spraying/fogging by county mosquito "control" of synthetic pyrethroids all show how dumb we are. If we lose our pollinators  ...we cannot survive!
.
Length of walk approximately 2 miles. Water and snack always a good idea. Rain cancels walk.

Directions to meeting site at the Mill Bogs Wildlife Management Area: From Assonet Four Corners follow Route 79 northeast to Forge Road. Right on Forge Road approximately 1,000' to Howland Road. East, right, on Howland Road approximately 1 1/2 miles to the Mill Bog WMA parking area. It will be on your right. If you see a vast cranberry bog off to your right behind a single row of houses you have just passed the parking area. The parking area is just before the bog comes into view.

Bike Fall River Sunset/Moonlight Ride - Full Buck Moon

It was a warm ride Friday night as we set off for Providence on the East Bay Bike Path.  A pleasant breeze kept us comfortable.  It was busy when we arrived at India Point Park.  People were enjoying the perfect weather.  We set off with 7 riders and completed the ride with 6.  A game in East Providence lured one of our riders away.  We accomplished 21 miles round trip.

Here are 2 pictures from India Point Park
