Just for Fun!

Ellisville Harbor State Park

This little hike was a very pleasant surprise! Situated right on the edge of Plymouth County and Barnstable County, the moderate drive is easy and scenic. On arrival, there is an adequate parking lot and a sign describing the hike and the history of the area.

Direction to the Area

From Fall River, take I-195 to Rte.25 towards the Cape. Do not cross the canal. Take Rte.6 to Rte.3 North, towards Plymouth.Take Rte. 3A North and watch for the sign on your right.

After you park the car and enjoy the invigorating ocean air and view, follow one of the many paths into a meadow scattered with scrub oak and pine , and hardwoods. All paths lead either back to 3A or to a dirt road. Get onto the dirt road, heading towards the ocean. You will pass an abandoned tree farm on your left.

Continue down the road until you reach a sign concerning private homes. Bear right onto the footpath which leads to the beach on Cape Cod Bay. This area is quiet and beautiful and, bearing right, roughly a mile hike to the salt marsh. But the absolute best part of this hike are the seals! According to Michael Tougias' book More Nature Walks in Massachusetts, the harbor seals winter here from October until early spring. Looking out into the water we spotted the seals who spotted us and swam parallel to us on our walk. When we sat to eat, they watched us watching them! Unfortunately it was a windy, brisk day so the seals were not sunning themselves. But there's no doubt about it...next time we go, I'm bringing the zoom lens!

Just a note:
We would like to remind you to take care of this area and any green spaces you venture to. Please carry out any trash you may have and respect the beauty of the area.
