APRIL 2022 - Early Spring Walk

ACTIVITY ALERT - April's Walk

This past Saturday morning was a spring perfect time for a 4  1/2 mile walk through a part of the Watuppa Reservation. We were surrounded by white pines, oaks, beech and holly as we walked along Brightman Trail, Indian Turn Trail, Thurston Trail, Deadman's Trail, Lightning Trail and Blossom Road.

Spring comes slowly to a New England forest. If one looked closely, tree and shrub buds were swelling and spring azures, out since March, were evident along the trails. For more on the spring azure go here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celastrina_ladon

Next walk planned for May 14. More details: First week in May.

Creeping myrtle, Vinca minor, blooming along Blossom Road. Vinca is an attractive alien groundcover native to Europe from Portugal across to France, Germany and adjacent countries.

A frugal red squirrel watching us start out on our hike as it eats its hickory nut breakfast it had wisely stored away last fall.
