INFO ALERT  - LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE FUNGUS AMONG US

One of our more popular monthly walks in the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve is our September or October walk searching for fall mushrooms. Although one may find and identify woodland mushroom species in any season, in our neck of the woods autumn ...preferably a damp autumn ...is the season of greatest abundance and variety.

Every year, after the walk, we are contacted by some of the participants who want to further their knowledge of these interesting and mysterious forest denizens. Some folks want to identify mushrooms so they know which ones are safe to eat and to perfect their mushroom hunting skills. Others just want to have the satisfaction of being able to identify the mushroom species they encounter when out hiking. Mushrooms come in an amazing array of shapes and in almost every color making them great subjects for budding wildlife photographers too.

The Boston Mycological Club (BMC), the oldest amateur mycological club in the United States, is offering new members spring classes designed to orient you to the forest, to identification and (in general) to get you started mushroom foraging.  Four Monday evenings:  May 20, June 3, 10, 17.

If interested, check out the BMC here: http://www.bostonmycologicalclub.org/
